Do I need a website if my business is on Instagram and WhatsApp?
Social accounts reach people who already follow you. Search reaches people who have never heard of you. Here is what each one does that the other cannot.
This is the most common question we get, and the honest answer is that they do different jobs. A lot of small businesses in India run entirely on an Instagram page and a WhatsApp number, and some of them are right to.
The problem is that social media only reaches people who are already looking at you. Search reaches the ones who have never heard your name.
What Instagram and WhatsApp are genuinely better at
- Showing new work often, to people who already follow you.
- Replying in two minutes, which no contact form will ever beat.
- Being free, and being where your customers already spend their evenings.
- Proof through photos, especially for salons, boutiques, bakeries and studios.
If someone knows your name and wants to see your latest work, your Instagram is the better page. That is not a small thing and we would never tell you to stop posting.
What they cannot do
| The gap | What it costs you |
|---|---|
| It does not appear when someone searches your service | Every person who searched "salon near me" instead of your name went to someone else. |
| You do not own it | A locked account, a changed algorithm or a policy update, and your entire shopfront is gone with no way to appeal. |
| It cannot hold a price list | People who cannot see a price assume it is expensive and stop asking. |
| It reads as informal | For anything with a contract, a fee or a deposit, a profile alone makes people hesitate. |
| It cannot receive ads well | If you ever run ads, sending traffic to a profile wastes most of what you paid for. |
A social profile answers "is this business any good". A website answers "does this business exist and can I trust it with money".
The search gap is the whole argument
Open Google and search what you sell, with your city. Whoever appears in those results is getting customers who have never heard of either of you. Instagram almost never appears there, and Google Maps and websites almost always do. That is the traffic a website is for.
It compounds, too. Social posts are worth the most on the day you publish them and almost nothing a month later. A page that ranks keeps bringing people in while you sleep, for years, with no further posting.
When you genuinely do not need a website yet
- You are fully booked and turning work away. Fix your prices before you fix your marketing.
- You sell entirely through one marketplace and have no intention of leaving it.
- You have not settled on what the business is yet. Build the site once the offer stops changing every month.
In every one of those cases, do one free thing anyway: claim your Google Business Profile. It puts you on Maps, it costs nothing, and it is the single highest return hour a local business can spend.
The version most businesses actually need
Not a big site. Three pages: what you do, who you are, and how to reach you, with your prices visible and a WhatsApp button that opens a chat with a message already written. Your Instagram keeps doing what it is good at, and the site catches the people Instagram was never going to reach.
That is the ₹3,000 starter site, and it is deliberately the cheapest thing we sell. It is also, for most businesses reading this, the only thing they need from us.
